Question 15: Reading Comprehension

According to the passage, which of the following would help in the mitigation of greenhouse gases ?
- 1.Reducing the consumption of meat
- 2.Rapid economic liberalization
- 3.Reducing the consumerism
- 4.Modern management practices of livestock
Select the correct answer using the code given below :
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
The author says cutting emissions is not just a technology problem: people must live differently and the economy must change shape, for instance by eating far less meat, a major source of emissions that people control. So lower meat consumption and less consumerism both count. Liberalization and better livestock management are never put forward as ways to cut emissions.
- 1. Eating much less animal protein is the example the passage gives.
- 2. Liberalization is not offered as a mitigation measure.
- 3. The author asks for lifestyle change and a reshaped economy, which includes curbing consumption.
- 4. Livestock management practices are not discussed; the focus is on eating less animal protein.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (a), (b) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.
What you needed to know: Liberalization is not offered as a mitigation measure.
Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statements 1, 3 or 4.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Rapid economic liberalization is not mentioned as a mitigation measure.
- (b) Liberalization and modern livestock practices are not named as mitigation measures.
- (c) Right. Less meat and a less consumption-driven lifestyle are what the passage points to.
- (d) Neither liberalization nor livestock management practices appear in the passage.
