Question 86: Science and Technology
Fruits stored in a cold chamber exhibit longer storage life because
aexposure to sunlight is prevented
bconcentration of carbon dioxide in the environment is increased
crate of respiration is decreased
dthere is an increase in humidity
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
Fruits keep respiring after they are picked, using up stored sugars as they ripen and then spoil. Respiration is controlled by enzymes, whose activity falls as temperature drops. In a cold chamber the lower rate of respiration slows ripening and decay, so the fruits last longer. Sunlight, carbon dioxide concentration or humidity are not the main reason.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. Sunlight is not the main factor in spoilage here.
- (b) Wrong. Cold does not increase carbon dioxide; it reduces respiration.
- (c) Correct. Low temperature slows respiration and ripening.
- (d) Wrong. Humidity is not the cause of longer life under cold storage.
