Question 46: Science and Technology

Which of the following diseases can be transmitted from one person to another through tattooing?

  1. 1.Chikungunya
  2. 2.Hepatitis B
  3. 3.HIV-AIDS

Select the correct answer using the codes given below.

a1 only
b2 and 3 only
c1 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Tattooing pierces the skin with needles. If a needle or ink is shared or not sterilised, blood-borne viruses such as hepatitis B and HIV can pass from one person to another. Chikungunya is a viral disease spread by the bite of Aedes mosquitoes, not through tattooing. So 2 and 3 only.

  • 1. Chikungunya is spread by Aedes mosquitoes.
  • 2. Hepatitis B spreads through contaminated needles.
  • 3. HIV spreads through contaminated needles.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: Chikungunya is spread by Aedes mosquitoes.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 2 or 3.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. Chikungunya is spread by mosquitoes.
  • (b) Correct. Hepatitis B and HIV pass through contaminated needles.
  • (c) Wrong. Chikungunya is not spread by tattooing, and hepatitis B is left out.
  • (d) Wrong. Chikungunya is carried by mosquitoes.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
