Question 40: History and Culture

Quit India Movement was launched in response to

aCabinet Mission Plan
bCripps Proposals
cSimon Commission Report
dWavell Plan

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

The Cripps Mission of March 1942 offered Dominion status after the war and allowed provinces to stay out of the Union, which the Congress found unsatisfactory because it gave no real transfer of power during the war. Its failure led to the Quit India Movement, launched in August 1942. The Cabinet Mission (1946), Wavell Plan (1945) and Simon Commission Report (1930) came at other times.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. The Cabinet Mission Plan came in 1946, after Quit India.
  • (b) Correct. The failure of the Cripps Proposals led to Quit India in 1942.
  • (c) Wrong. The Simon Commission Report came in 1930, long before 1942.
  • (d) Wrong. The Wavell Plan came in 1945, after Quit India.
