Question 32: Environment and Ecology

Consider the following pairs :

National ParkRiver flowing through the Park
1Corbett National ParkGanga
2Kaziranga National ParkManas
3Silent Valley National ParkKaveri

Which of the above pairs is/are correctly matched?

a1 and 2
b3 only
c1 and 3
dNone

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

Corbett National Park is on the Ramganga river, not the Ganga. Kaziranga lies on the Brahmaputra floodplain; Manas is a separate national park in Assam with its own river, the Manas. Silent Valley in Kerala is drained by the Kunthipuzha, a tributary of the Bharathapuzha, not the Kaveri. So no pair is correctly matched.

  • 1. Corbett is on the Ramganga, not the Ganga.
  • 2. Kaziranga is on the Brahmaputra; Manas is a different park and river.
  • 3. Silent Valley's river is the Kunthipuzha, not the Kaveri.
Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. Neither Corbett and the Ganga nor Kaziranga and the Manas is a correct match.
  • (b) Wrong. Silent Valley is drained by the Kunthipuzha, not the Kaveri.
  • (c) Wrong. Both pairs 1 and 3 are mismatched.
  • (d) Correct. All three pairs are mismatched.
