Question 3: Geography

Which one of the following pairs is correctly matched?

Geographical FeatureRegion
aAbyssinian Plateau : Arabia
bAtlas Mountains : North-Western Africa
cGuiana Highlands : South-Western Africa
dOkavango Basin : Patagonia

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

The Atlas Mountains run through Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, in north-western Africa. The other pairs are misplaced: the Abyssinian Plateau is in Ethiopia, in north-east Africa; the Guiana Highlands lie in north-eastern South America; and the Okavango Basin is in Botswana, in southern Africa, nowhere near Patagonia at the southern tip of South America.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. The Abyssinian Plateau is in Ethiopia, north-east Africa, not Arabia.
  • (b) Correct. The Atlas range lies in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, in north-western Africa.
  • (c) Wrong. The Guiana Highlands are in north-eastern South America, not south-western Africa.
  • (d) Wrong. The Okavango Basin is in Botswana, southern Africa; Patagonia is in Argentina and Chile.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
