AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
Aflatoxins are poisonous compounds produced by moulds, chiefly Aspergillus flavus, that grow on damp, badly stored cereals, groundnuts and other oilseeds. They are heat-stable, so ordinary cooking does not destroy them, and long exposure can damage the liver and cause liver cancer. Bacteria, protozoa and viruses do not make aflatoxins.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. Aflatoxins are made by fungi, not bacteria.
- (b) Wrong. Protozoa do not produce aflatoxins.
- (c) Correct. Moulds such as Aspergillus produce them.
- (d) Wrong. Viruses cannot make toxins of this kind.
