Consider the following statements : Attorney General of India can
- 1.take part in the proceedings of the Lok Sabha
- 2.be a member of a committee of the Lok Sabha
- 3.speak in the Lok Sabha
- 4.vote in the Lok Sabha
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).
Article 88 gives the Attorney General the right to speak in, and otherwise take part in the proceedings of, either House, a joint sitting and any parliamentary committee of which he is named a member. The same article says he has no right to vote. He is not a member of either House, so he can take part, sit on a committee and speak, but cannot vote.
- 1. Article 88 lets him take part in proceedings of either House.
- 2. He may be named a member of a parliamentary committee.
- 3. He has the right to speak in the House.
- 4. He has no right to vote.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Article 88 lets him take part in proceedings of either House.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) and (d) go: each of them leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: He may be named a member of a parliamentary committee.
Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statements 3 or 4.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. He can also be a committee member and speak.
- (b) Wrong. He can be a committee member but has no vote.
- (c) Correct. He can take part, be on a committee and speak, but cannot vote.
