| Car | Mileage (km/l) | Hours | Total Payment (₹) |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 8 | 20 | 2120 |
| B | 10 | 25 | 1950 |
| C | 9 | 24 | 2064 |
| D | 11 | 22 | 1812 |
Which car maintained the maximum average speed ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).
Cost per km = Rs 6 + diesel (Rs 40 divided by mileage). Distance = total payment divided by cost per km; speed = distance divided by hours. A: cost 6 + 5 = 11 per km, distance 2120/11 = about 192.7 km, speed about 9.6 km/h. B: cost 10 per km, 195 km, 7.8 km/h. C: cost about 10.44 per km, about 197.6 km, about 8.2 km/h. D: cost about 9.64 per km, about 188.0 km, about 8.5 km/h. Car A is fastest.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right. About 9.6 km/h, the highest.
- (b) Wrong. 195 km in 25 hours is 7.8 km/h, the lowest.
- (c) Wrong. About 8.2 km/h.
- (d) Wrong. About 8.5 km/h.
