Question 16: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Passage · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “A tennis coach is trying to put…”

If B is selected and Y is rejected, the team will consist of which one of the following groups ?

aA, B, C and W
bA, B, C and Z
cA, B, C and X
dA, W, Y and Z

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (c).

B is in and Y is out. W cannot play with B, so W is out. Now test the options. (a) puts W with B, which is not allowed. (b) puts Z with C, which is not allowed. (c) A, B, C and X breaks no rule and has three males. (d) leaves out B, who was selected, and also pairs W with Y. So (c) is the only option that works. A, B, X and Z would also be legal, but it is not offered.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. B and W cannot play together.
  • (b) Wrong. C and Z cannot play together.
  • (c) Right. No restriction is broken and at least two males are present.
  • (d) Wrong. B is missing though selected, and W cannot play with Y.
