Question 11: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Passage · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “Five cities P, Q, R, S and T…”

Which mode of transport would help one to reach R starting from Q, but without changing the mode of transport ?

aBoat
bRail
cBus
dAir

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

Draw the links: P-Q by boat and rail; R-S by bus and boat; Q-T by air only; P-R by boat only; T-R by rail and bus. From Q to R on one mode, boat works through P: Q to P by boat, then P to R by boat. Rail fails because P-R is boat only, and the Q-T-R route needs air first. Bus is not available out of Q at all, and air takes Q only to T, from where R is reached by rail or bus.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right. Q to P by boat, then P to R by boat.
  • (b) Wrong. Rail runs from Q to P, but P to R is boat only.
  • (c) Wrong. No bus link leaves Q.
  • (d) Wrong. Air takes Q only to T; T to R is by rail or bus.
