Question 73: Reading Comprehension

Passage – 3 · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “A local man, staying on the…”

The man was called a hero because he

aexpressed his willingness to risk his life to save others.
bmanaged to escape from the fire.
cshowed great courage in fighting the fire.
dsaved a life.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).

The man escaped by falling through the floor while holding a bundle that turned out to be the Mayor's wife's baby. He therefore saved a baby's life, though he had not planned to, and that is why he was congratulated. He did not volunteer to risk his life or fight the fire, and merely escaping would not make him a hero. The word hero is earned here by the outcome, not by intention.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. He had no such intention; he picked up the bundle only to shield his face.
  • (b) Wrong. Escaping alone would not make him a hero.
  • (c) Wrong. He did not fight the fire.
  • (d) Right. The bundle was a baby, so his escape saved a life.
