Question 68: Reading Comprehension

Passage – 1 · as printed by UPSC
Passage beginning “For fourteen and a half months…”

The author of the passage seems to suggest that

ait is possible to adjust oneself to uncongenial surroundings.
bthe conditions in Indian prisons are not bad.
cit is not difficult to spend one’s time in a prison.
dthere is a need to improve the conditions in our jails.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (a).

After more than fourteen months in the same small cell, the author felt familiar with it and found company in the grass, stones and insects around him. The passage therefore suggests that a person can adjust even to an unpleasant place, option (a). It does not judge the state of prisons, so (b) and (d) are not supported. Nor does it say that passing time in prison is easy, which is option (c)'s claim.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right. He settled into a bare cell over fourteen months, so adjustment is possible.
  • (b) Wrong. The passage says nothing about conditions in Indian prisons generally.
  • (c) Wrong. It shows adjustment, not that time passes easily.
  • (d) Wrong. Improving jail conditions is not raised.

Answer: UPSC’s key. Explanation: written by UPSC Grade, not by UPSC.
