Question 64: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability
Examine the following statements :
- 1.None but the rich can afford air-travel.
- 2.Some of those who travel by air become sick.
- 3.Some of those who become sick require treatment.
Which one of the following conclusions can be drawn from the above statements ?
AnswerUPSC’s answer is (d).
Statement 1 says none but the rich can afford air-travel, which means everyone who travels by air is rich. That is conclusion (d). Option (a) reverses it, since being rich does not make someone travel by air. Option (b) turns 'some travellers become sick' into all. Option (c) has no support: the statements say nothing about all rich people being ill. Remember: 'none but A are B' means all B are A.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong. This reverses statement 1; being rich is necessary for air travel, not a guarantee of it.
- (b) Wrong. Statement 2 says only some air travellers become sick.
- (c) Wrong. Nothing links all rich persons to sickness.
- (d) Right. None but the rich can afford air-travel, so everyone who flies is rich.
