Question 43: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Consider the following statements :

  1. 1.All X-brand cars parked here are white.
  2. 2.Some of them have radial tyres.
  3. 3.All X-brand cars manufactured after 1986 have radial tyres.
  4. 4.All cars are not X-brand.

Which one of the following conclusions can be drawn from the above statements ?

aOnly white cars are parked here.
bSome white X-brand cars with radial tyres are parked here.
cCars other than X-brand cannot have radial tyres.
dMost of the X-brand cars are manufactured before 1986.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Statement 1: every X-brand car parked here is white. Statement 2: some of those cars have radial tyres. Those cars are therefore white X-brand cars with radial tyres, so conclusion (b) holds. Option (a) ignores non-X cars that may also be parked here. Option (c) says other brands cannot have radial tyres, which no statement says. Option (d) needs figures on manufacture dates that are not given.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. Non-X-brand cars may also be parked here, in any colour.
  • (b) Right. The X-brand cars with radial tyres are white, since all X-brand cars parked here are white.
  • (c) Wrong. Nothing is said about radial tyres on other brands.
  • (d) Wrong. No data is given on how many cars were made before 1986.
