Question 41: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Examine the following statements :

  1. 1.None but students are members of the club.
  2. 2.Some members of the club are married persons.
  3. 3.All married persons are invited for dance.

Which one of the following conclusions can be drawn from the above statements ?

aAll students are invited for dance.
bAll married students of the club are invited for dance.
cAll members of the club are married persons.
dNone of the above conclusions can be drawn.

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

Statement 1 means every member is a student. Statement 2 says some members are married. Statement 3 says all married persons are invited for dance. So any married member, who is a married student of the club, is invited: conclusion (b). Option (a) wrongly extends the invitation to all students, married or not. Option (c) takes 'some' as 'all'. Since (b) follows, (d) fails. Remember: 'none but students are members' means all members are students, not that all students are members.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. Only married persons are invited; unmarried students are not covered.
  • (b) Right. Married members of the club are married persons, and all married persons are invited.
  • (c) Wrong. Statement 2 says only some members are married.
  • (d) Wrong. Conclusion (b) can be drawn.
