Question 20: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

Three persons A, B and C wore shirts of black, blue and orange colours (not necessarily in that order) and pants of green, yellow and orange colours (not necessarily in that order). No person wore shirt and pants of the same colour. Further, it is given that

  1. 1.A did not wear shirt of black colour.
  2. 2.B did not wear shirt of blue colour.
  3. 3.C did not wear shirt of orange colour.
  4. 4.A did not wear pants of green colour.
  5. 5.B wore pants of orange colour.

What were the colours of the pants and shirt worn by C, respectively ?

aOrange and black
bGreen and blue
cYellow and blue
dYellow and black

AnswerUPSC’s answer is (b).

B wore orange pants, so B's shirt is not orange (same colour) and not blue (given); it is black. A's shirt is not black, so it is blue or orange. C's shirt is not orange and black is taken, so C wears blue and A wears orange. A's pants are not green (given) and not orange (B has them), so they are yellow. That leaves green pants for C. So C wore green pants and a blue shirt.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong. Orange pants are B's, and the black shirt is B's.
  • (b) Right. C's shirt must be blue and the only pants left are green.
  • (c) Wrong. Yellow pants are A's.
  • (d) Wrong. The black shirt is B's and yellow pants are A's.
