Question 78: Logical Reasoning and Mental Ability

In a group of five persons A, B, C, D and E, there is a professor, a doctor and lawyer. A and D are unmarried ladies, and do not work. Of the married couple in the Group, E is the husband. B is the brother of A and is neither a doctor nor a lawyer. Who is the professor ?

aB
bC
cA
dCannot be determined with the available data

AnswerThe answer is (a).

A and D are unmarried women who do not work, so the professor, doctor and lawyer are among B, C and E. E is the husband in the married couple, and his wife must be C, because A and D are unmarried and B is A's brother. So B, C and E are the three professionals. B is neither a doctor nor a lawyer, so B is the professor. Remember: remove the non-working persons first.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: B is left as the professor.
  • (b) C is the wife and one of the doctor or lawyer.
  • (c) A does not work, so cannot be the professor.
  • (d) The data are enough to determine the professor.
