Question 5: Science and Technology
Mon 863 is a variety of maize. It was in the news for the following reason
AnswerThe answer is (b).
MON 863 is a genetically modified maize developed by Monsanto that carries a gene from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis. The gene makes the plant produce a protein that kills the larvae of the corn rootworm beetle, so the crop resists that pest. It was in the news because of debate over its safety as food and feed. Remember: Bt crops (Bt cotton, Bt brinjal, Bt maize) are insect-resistant varieties, not drought-tolerant, high-protein or bio-fuel ones.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Drought tolerance is a different trait; MON 863 was modified for insect resistance, not dwarfing.
- (b) Right: it is a Bt maize that resists the corn rootworm pest.
- (c) Higher protein content is not the trait of MON 863.
- (d) It is a food and feed crop; it was not made exclusively for bio-fuel.
