Question 49: Economy and Social Development
An objective of the National Food Security Mission is to increase the production of certain crops through area expansion and productivity enhancement in a sustainable manner in the identified districts of the country. What are those crops ?
AnswerThe answer is (b).
The National Food Security Mission was launched in 2007-08 to raise production of rice, wheat and pulses through area expansion and productivity enhancement, in a sustainable way, in identified districts. Oilseeds and vegetables were not part of that original mission. Remember: NFSM at launch = rice + wheat + pulses.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Leaves out pulses, which were included.
- (b) Right: rice, wheat and pulses only.
- (c) Oilseeds were not part of the original mission.
- (d) Neither oilseeds nor vegetables were part of the original mission.
Worth knowing: NFSM has since been widened to coarse cereals and other crops in later Plans, so the answer holds only for the mission as launched in 2007-08.
