Question 37: Science and Technology

Recently, LASIK (Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) procedure is being made popular for vision correction. Which one of the following statements in this context is not correct ?

aLASIK procedure is used to correct refractive errors of the eye
bIt is a procedure that permanently changes the shapes of the cornea
cIt reduces a person’s dependence on glasses or contact lenses
dIt is a procedure that can be done on the person of any age

AnswerThe answer is (d).

LASIK uses a laser to reshape the cornea and so correct refractive errors such as short sight, long sight and astigmatism. The change in corneal shape is permanent and most patients become much less dependent on glasses or contact lenses. It is not for everyone: it is generally done only on adults (usually 18 or older) whose eye power has been stable, so the statement that it can be done at any age is wrong. Remember: LASIK suits stable prescriptions in adults, not children.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: LASIK corrects refractive errors.
  • (b) Correct: the reshaping of the cornea is permanent.
  • (c) Correct: it lessens the need for spectacles or lenses.
  • (d) Right (the false statement): it is not suitable for children or for people whose eye power is still changing.
