Question 110: Science and Technology

In the context of space technology, what is “Bhuvan”, recently in the news ?

aA mini satellite launched by ISRO for promoting the distance education in India
bThe name given to the next Moon Impact Probe, for Chandrayan-II
cA geoportal of ISRO with 3 D imaging capabilities of India
dA space telescope developed by India

AnswerThe answer is (c).

Bhuvan is ISRO's web-based geoportal, launched in 2009 by the National Remote Sensing Centre, Hyderabad. It offers 3D satellite imagery and maps of India, which anyone can view free of charge, much like a home-grown Google Earth. It is not a satellite, a Chandrayaan-II probe or a space telescope. Remember: Bhuvan = ISRO's geoportal.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Bhuvan is not a satellite.
  • (b) Bhuvan is not a probe for Chandrayaan-II.
  • (c) Right: Bhuvan is an ISRO geoportal with 3D imaging.
  • (d) Bhuvan is not a telescope.
