Question 93: History and Culture
Consider the following statements :
- 1.The National School of Drama was set up by Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1959.
- 2.The highest honour conferred by the Sahitya Akademi on a writer is by electing him its Fellow.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?
AnswerThe answer is (c).
Both statements are correct. The National School of Drama was set up by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1959 and became an autonomous body in 1975. The highest honour the Sahitya Akademi gives a writer is election as its Fellow, a distinction limited to a small number of living writers, above its annual Sahitya Akademi Awards.
- 1. The NSD was set up by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1959.
- 2. Fellowship is the Sahitya Akademi's highest honour.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: The NSD was set up by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1959.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Fellowship is the Sahitya Akademi's highest honour.
Only (c) is left. This one needs every statement.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: the Fellowship claim is also correct.
- (b) Wrong: the NSD claim is also correct.
- (c) Right: both statements are correct.
- (d) Wrong: both statements are correct.
