Question 77: Polity and Governance
If a Panchayat is dissolved, elections are to be held within
a1 month
b3 months
c6 months
d1 year
AnswerThe answer is (c).
If a Panchayat is dissolved before the end of its five-year term, elections to constitute a new one must be completed within six months of the dissolution, under Article 243E of the Constitution (inserted by the 73rd Amendment, 1992). The new body then serves only for the unexpired part of the term. This rule matches the provisions for Municipalities.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) One month is shorter than the constitutional limit.
- (b) Three months is shorter than the limit.
- (c) Right: elections must be held within six months.
- (d) One year is longer than the limit.
