Question 62: History and Culture
Consider the following statements: The Cripps Proposals include the provision for
- 1.Full independence for India.
- 2.Creation of Constitution-making body.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerThe answer is (b).
Only statement 2 is correct. The Cripps Proposals of 1942 offered Dominion status after the war, not full independence, together with a constituent assembly elected by the provincial assemblies to frame the Constitution, and the right of provinces to stay out of the Union. Congress rejected the plan because it did not offer immediate independence or a united India.
- 1. The proposal offered Dominion status after the war, not full independence.
- 2. A constitution-making body was promised after the war.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: The proposal offered Dominion status after the war, not full independence.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (d) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: A constitution-making body was promised after the war.
Only (b) is left. This one needs every statement.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: the offer was Dominion status, not full independence.
- (b) Right: only the constituent assembly provision is correct.
- (c) Wrong: statement 1 is false.
- (d) Wrong: statement 2 is correct.
