Question 48: History and Culture
Consider the following statements :
- 1.The discussions in the Third Round Table Conference eventually led to the passing of the Government of India Act of 1935.
- 2.The Government of India Act of 1935 provided for the establishment of an All India Federation to be based on a Union of the provinces of British India and the Princely States.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?
AnswerThe answer is (c).
Both statements are correct. The Third Round Table Conference (November-December 1932) discussions, following the earlier two conferences, led to the White Paper of 1933, a Joint Parliamentary Committee and then the Government of India Act 1935. The Act provided for an All India Federation of British Indian provinces and princely states, but the federal part never came into force because the princes did not agree.
- 1. The Third Round Table Conference led, via the White Paper, to the 1935 Act.
- 2. The 1935 Act provided for an All India Federation of provinces and princely states.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) and (d) go: each of them leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: The 1935 Act provided for an All India Federation of provinces and princely states.
The red flag in statement 2 is “all”. In UPSC’s papers, statements with “all” were true 41% of the time (76 statements). A hint, not a rule.
- Then, if you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: The Third Round Table Conference led, via the White Paper, to the 1935 Act.
Only (c) is left. This one needs every statement.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wrong: statement 2 is also correct.
- (b) Wrong: statement 1 is also correct.
- (c) Right: both statements are correct.
- (d) Wrong: both statements are correct.
