Question 18: History and Culture

Consider the following pairs: Tradition — State

  1. 1.Gatka, a traditional martial art : Kerala
  2. 2.Madhubani, a traditional painting : Bihar
  3. 3.Singhye Khababs Sindhu Darshan Festival : Jammu and Kashmir

Which of the pairs given above is/are correctly matched?

a1 and 2 only
b3 only
c2 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerThe answer is (c).

Pairs 2 and 3 are correct. Madhubani painting comes from the Mithila region of Bihar. The Sindhu Darshan festival, a celebration of the Indus river, is held at Leh and the Singhye Khababs (Lion's Mouth) name refers to the Indus's source; in 2009 this region was in Jammu and Kashmir. Gatka is the martial art of the Sikhs of Punjab; Kerala's traditional martial art is Kalaripayattu.

  • 1. Gatka is a Sikh martial art of Punjab; Kerala's is Kalaripayattu.
  • 2. Madhubani painting is from the Mithila region of Bihar.
  • 3. The Sindhu Darshan festival is held at Leh, then in Jammu and Kashmir.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: Gatka is a Sikh martial art of Punjab; Kerala's is Kalaripayattu.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: Madhubani painting is from the Mithila region of Bihar.

Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: pair 1 is incorrect, since Gatka belongs to Punjab, not Kerala.
  • (b) Wrong: pair 2 (Madhubani-Bihar) is also correct.
  • (c) Right: Madhubani-Bihar and Sindhu Darshan-Jammu and Kashmir are correct.
  • (d) Wrong: pair 1 is incorrect.

Worth knowing: The Sindhu Darshan festival is held at Leh, which has been in the Union Territory of Ladakh since 2019, so the pair would no longer read Jammu and Kashmir.
