Question 124: Economy and Social Development
Consider the following statements :
- 1.The Baglihar Power Project had been constructed within the parameters of the Indus Water Treaty.
- 2.The project was completely built by the Union Government with loans from Japan and the World Bank.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?
AnswerThe answer is (a).
Statement 1 is correct: the Baglihar project on the Chenab in Jammu and Kashmir was disputed by Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty, but a Neutral Expert in 2007 held that its design largely conformed to the Treaty, with minor changes. Statement 2 is wrong: it was a project of the J&K State Power Development Corporation, not built completely by the Union Government with Japanese and World Bank loans.
- 1. The Neutral Expert found the project largely within the Indus Waters Treaty.
- 2. It was a J&K State Power Development Corporation project, not wholly a Union Government build.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: The Neutral Expert found the project largely within the Indus Waters Treaty.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (c) goes: it includes 2.
What you needed to know: It was a J&K State Power Development Corporation project, not wholly a Union Government build.
Only (a) is left. This one needs every statement.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Right: only statement 1 is correct.
- (b) Wrong: statement 2 is incorrect.
- (c) Wrong: statement 2 is incorrect.
- (d) Wrong: statement 1 is correct.
