Question 120: Economy and Social Development

Consider the following pairs : Automobile Manufacturer : Headquarters

  1. 1.BMW AG : USA
  2. 2.Daimler AG : Sweden
  3. 3.Renault S.A.: France
  4. 4.Volkswagen AG: Germany

Which of the pairs given above is/are correctly matched ?

a1, 2 and 3
b3 and 4
c4 only
d1, 2 and 4

AnswerThe answer is (b).

Renault S.A. is French and Volkswagen AG is German, so pairs 3 and 4 are correct. BMW AG is headquartered in Munich, Germany, not the USA, and Daimler AG (maker of Mercedes-Benz) in Stuttgart, Germany, not Sweden. The Swedish car makers are Volvo and Saab.

  • 1. BMW AG is German, not American.
  • 2. Daimler AG is German, not Swedish.
  • 3. Renault S.A. is French.
  • 4. Volkswagen AG is German.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: BMW AG is German, not American.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is correct, (c) goes: it leaves 3 out.

What you needed to know: Renault S.A. is French.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 2 or 4.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Wrong: BMW is German and Daimler is German.
  • (b) Right: Renault-France and Volkswagen-Germany are correct.
  • (c) Wrong: Renault is also correctly matched.
  • (d) Wrong: BMW is German and Daimler is German.
