Question 111: Environment and Ecology
In the context of CO₂ emission and Global Warming, what is the name of a market-driven device under the UNFCCC that allows developing countries to get funds/incentives from the developed countries to adopt better technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions ?
AnswerThe answer is (c).
The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), created under the Kyoto Protocol of the UNFCCC, lets developed countries earn emission-reduction credits by funding clean projects in developing countries, such as wind farms. It is market-driven and moves money and technology to the developing country. A carbon footprint is only a measure, and the other two options are not UNFCCC mechanisms.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) A carbon footprint measures emissions; it is not a funding mechanism.
- (b) Carbon credit rating is not a UNFCCC device.
- (c) Right: the CDM channels funds to developing countries.
- (d) An emission reduction norm is a standard, not a market device.
