Question 108: Economy and Social Development

Consider the following pairs :

  1. 1.Ashok Leyland : Hinduja Group
  2. 2.Hindalco Industries : A.V. Birla Group
  3. 3.Suzlon Energy : Punj Lloyd Group

Which of the pairs given above is/are correctly matched ?

a1 and 2 only
b2 only
c1 and 3 only
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerThe answer is (a).

Ashok Leyland is part of the Hinduja Group, and Hindalco Industries belongs to the Aditya Vikram (A. V.) Birla Group, so pairs 1 and 2 are correct. Suzlon Energy is the wind-power company founded by Tulsi Tanti, not part of the Punj Lloyd Group, so pair 3 is wrong.

  • 1. Ashok Leyland is a Hinduja Group company.
  • 2. Hindalco belongs to the Aditya Birla Group.
  • 3. Suzlon is not a Punj Lloyd group firm; it was founded by Tulsi Tanti.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: Ashok Leyland is a Hinduja Group company.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.

What you needed to know: Suzlon is not a Punj Lloyd group firm; it was founded by Tulsi Tanti.

Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statement 2.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Right: Ashok Leyland-Hinduja and Hindalco-A. V. Birla are correct.
  • (b) Wrong: pair 1 is also correct.
  • (c) Wrong: pair 3 is incorrect.
  • (d) Wrong: pair 3 is incorrect.
