Question 10: Geography

In India, the ports are categorized as major and non-major ports. Which one of the following is a non-major port?

aKochi (Cochin)
bDahej
cParadip
dNew Mangalore

AnswerThe answer is (b).

Major ports are owned and run by the Union Government under port trusts; all other ports, such as Dahej in Gujarat, are non-major and come under the State maritime board. Kochi (Cochin), Paradip in Odisha and New Mangalore in Karnataka are all major ports. Dahej, on the Gujarat coast and serving its chemical and petrochemical cluster, is the non-major port in this list.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Kochi (Cochin) is a major port in Kerala.
  • (b) Dahej is in Gujarat and comes under the Gujarat Maritime Board: a non-major port.
  • (c) Paradip is a major port on the Odisha coast.
  • (d) New Mangalore is a major port in Karnataka.
