Question 99: Polity and Governance
Under which one of the following Constitution Amendment Acts, four languages were added to the languages under the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India, thereby raising their number to 22?
AnswerThe answer is (c).
The 92nd Amendment Act, 2003 added four languages to the Eighth Schedule: Bodo, Dogri, Maithili and Santhali, raising the number from 18 to 22. Earlier additions were Sindhi (21st Amendment, 1967) and Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali (71st Amendment, 1992). The 96th Amendment (2011) changed the name Oriya to Odia but did not change the count.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) The 90th Amendment did not add languages to the Eighth Schedule.
- (b) The 91st Amendment limited the size of Councils of Ministers and tightened the anti-defection law.
- (c) The 92nd Amendment added Bodo, Dogri, Maithili and Santhali.
- (d) The 93rd Amendment dealt with reservation in educational institutions.
