Question 92: Economy and Social Development
Amongst the following States, which one has the highest percentage of rural population to its total population (on the basis of the Census, 2001)?
AnswerThe answer is (a).
In Census 2001 Himachal Pradesh had the highest rural share among these States, with about 90 per cent of its people living in villages, against about 89.5 in Bihar, 85 in Orissa and 79 in Uttar Pradesh. Himachal has few large towns because of its hilly terrain, while Bihar follows closely because it is poorly urbanised.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Himachal Pradesh is about 90% rural, the highest of the four.
- (b) Bihar is about 89.5% rural, slightly lower than Himachal.
- (c) Orissa is about 85% rural.
- (d) Uttar Pradesh is about 79% rural.
