Question 9: Economy and Social Development
Which of the following pairs about India's economic indicator and agricultural production (all in rounded figures) are correctly matched?
- 1.GDP per capita (current prices) : Rs 37,000
- 2.Rice : 180 million tons
- 3.Wheat : 75 million tons
Select the correct answer using the code given below :
AnswerThe answer is (d).
Only pairs 1 and 3 hold. India's GDP per capita at current prices was roughly Rs 37,000 around 2006-07, and wheat output was about 75 million tonnes. Rice output was roughly 90 to 95 million tonnes, about half of the 180 million quoted, so pair 2 is wrong. The question is tied to the figures of that period, which have risen a great deal since.
- 1. GDP per capita at current prices was roughly Rs 37,000 around 2006-07.
- 2. Rice output was about 90 to 95 million tonnes, not 180.
- 3. Wheat output was about 75 million tonnes at the time.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (a), (b) and (c) go: each of them includes 2.
What you needed to know: Rice output was about 90 to 95 million tonnes, not 180.
Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 3.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Includes pair 2, whose rice figure is about double the real output.
- (b) Includes pair 2 and leaves out wheat, which is correctly matched.
- (c) Leaves out pair 1; the per-capita GDP figure is roughly right for the period.
- (d) Pairs 1 and 3 are right; pair 2 is not.
