Question 84: History and Culture
Who was the Viceroy of India when the Rowlatt Act was passed?
aLord Irwin
bLord Reading
cLord Chelmsford
dLord Wavell
AnswerThe answer is (c).
The Rowlatt Act, passed in March 1919, allowed the government to imprison suspects without trial. It was passed when Lord Chelmsford was Viceroy (1916-21). It set off Gandhi's first all-India satyagraha, and the protests led to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in April 1919. Reading followed Chelmsford in 1921, Irwin was Viceroy from 1926 to 1931 and Wavell from 1943 to 1947.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Irwin was Viceroy from 1926 to 1931.
- (b) Reading succeeded Chelmsford in 1921.
- (c) Chelmsford was Viceroy in 1919.
- (d) Wavell was Viceroy from 1943 to 1947.
