Question 82: Geography
In order of their distances from the Sun, which of the following planets lie between Mars and Uranus?
aEarth and Jupiter
bJupiter and Saturn
cSaturn and Earth
dSaturn and Neptune
AnswerThe answer is (b).
From the Sun the planets lie in this order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Jupiter and Saturn therefore lie between Mars and Uranus. Earth is nearer the Sun than Mars, and Neptune is beyond Uranus. The four rocky inner planets are followed by the two gas giants and then the two ice giants.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Earth lies inside Mars's orbit, not between Mars and Uranus.
- (b) Jupiter and Saturn lie between Mars and Uranus.
- (c) Earth is nearer the Sun than Mars, so it is not between them.
- (d) Neptune lies beyond Uranus.
