Question 79: International Relations and Current Affairs
Ogaden region has been a source of conflict between which countries?
aMorocco and Algeria
bNigeria and Cameroon
cAngola and Zambia
dEthiopia and Somalia
AnswerThe answer is (d).
The Ogaden is a largely Somali-inhabited region in south-eastern Ethiopia. Somalia has long claimed it, and the two countries fought the Ogaden War of 1977-78, in which Ethiopia, helped by the Soviet Union and Cuba, defeated Somalia. The other options are different disputes: Morocco and Algeria over Western Sahara, and Nigeria and Cameroon over the Bakassi peninsula.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Morocco and Algeria are linked with the Western Sahara dispute.
- (b) Nigeria and Cameroon disputed the Bakassi peninsula.
- (c) Angola and Zambia are not linked with the Ogaden.
- (d) Ethiopia and Somalia contested the Ogaden.
