The Tapovan-Vishnugad hydroelectric project is an NTPC run-of-the-river project on the Dhauliganga river in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, near Joshimath. Uttarakhand, with the steep Alaknanda and Bhagirathi basins, hosts many such projects, including Tehri and Vishnuprayag. Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan lack the steep Himalayan rivers needed for projects of this kind.
