Question 53: Economy and Social Development

Which of the following pairs in respect of current power generation in India is/are correctly matched? (Rounded Figure)

  1. 1.Installed electricity generation capacity : 100000 MW
  2. 2.Electricity generation : 660 billion kWh

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

a1 only
b2 only
cBoth 1 and 2
dNeither 1 nor 2

AnswerThe answer is (b).

Statement 2 is correct: electricity generation in India was about 660 billion kWh around 2007-08. Statement 1 is wrong: installed generating capacity had already reached about 1.4 lakh MW by then, not 100,000 MW. The question uses the figures of that time; India's capacity and generation are far larger now.

  • 1. Installed capacity was about 1.4 lakh MW around 2007-08.
  • 2. Generation was about 660 billion kWh in 2007-08.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: Installed capacity was about 1.4 lakh MW around 2007-08.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (d) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: Generation was about 660 billion kWh in 2007-08.

Only (b) is left. This one needs every statement.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Capacity was about 1.4 lakh MW, so pair 1 is wrong.
  • (b) Generation of about 660 billion kWh is right.
  • (c) Pair 1 fails, so both cannot be correct.
  • (d) Pair 2 is right, so neither being correct is wrong.
