Question 21: Polity and Governance

What is the number of spokes in the Dharmachakra in the National Flag of India?

a16
b18
c22
d24

AnswerThe answer is (d).

The Ashoka Chakra, the navy-blue wheel at the centre of the National Flag, has 24 equally spaced spokes. It is taken from the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath, and its diameter is close to the width of the white band. It stands for the wheel of law (dharma) and for motion and progress; the 24 spokes are often read as the 24 hours of the day.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) 16 is not the number of spokes.
  • (b) 18 is not the number of spokes.
  • (c) 22 is the number of languages in the Eighth Schedule after 2003, a mix-up to avoid.
  • (d) The Ashoka Chakra has 24 spokes.
