Question 146: Environment and Ecology

Among the following, which one is not an ape?

aGibbon
bGorilla
cLangur
dOrangutan

AnswerThe answer is (c).

A langur is a monkey, a tailed Old World monkey, and not an ape. Apes have no tail: they are the gibbon (a lesser ape) and the great apes, which are the gorilla, orangutan, chimpanzee and bonobo. Telling apes from monkeys by the tail is the quickest check.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) The gibbon is a lesser ape.
  • (b) The gorilla is a great ape.
  • (c) The langur is a monkey, not an ape.
  • (d) The orangutan is a great ape.
