Question 97: Economy and Social Development

Which one of the following is the correct sequence in the decreasing order of contribution of different sectors to the Gross Domestic Product of India?

aService – Industry – Agriculture
bService – Agriculture – Industry
cIndustry – Service – Agriculture
dIndustry – Agriculture – Service

AnswerThe answer is (a).

In India's GDP around 2006, services contributed the most (over half), followed by industry (roughly a quarter) and agriculture and allied sectors (about a fifth). So the correct sequence is Services, Industry, Agriculture. The share of services has been rising since the 1990s while that of agriculture keeps falling.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: Services, Industry, Agriculture.
  • (b) Puts agriculture above industry, which it was not.
  • (c) Puts industry above services, which it was not.
  • (d) Puts services last, which is wrong.
