Question 72: Geography

Which one of the following is the correct sequence in the decreasing order of production (in million tonnes) of the given food grains in India?

aWheat – Rice – Pulses – Coarse Cereals
bRice – Wheat – Pulses – Coarse Cereals
cWheat – Rice – Coarse Cereals – Pulses
dRice – Wheat – Coarse Cereals – Pulses

AnswerThe answer is (d).

In decreasing order of foodgrain output in India, rice comes first, then wheat, then coarse cereals (jowar, bajra, maize and the like), with pulses the smallest. So the order is Rice, Wheat, Coarse Cereals, Pulses. Remember that rice leads wheat by a fair margin and pulses are the laggard.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Puts wheat above rice and pulses above coarse cereals; both wrong.
  • (b) Rice and wheat right, but pulses are below coarse cereals.
  • (c) Puts wheat above rice; rice is larger.
  • (d) Correct: Rice, Wheat, Coarse Cereals, Pulses.
