Question 68: Economy and Social Development

With reference to the steel industry in India in recent times, consider the following statements:

  1. 1.Vizag Steel Plant (RINL) has been declared a Mini-Ratna.
  2. 2.Merger of IISCO with SAIL has been completed.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a1 only
b2 only
cBoth 1 and 2
dNeither 1 nor 2

AnswerThe answer is (c).

The given answer counts both statements as correct: Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (RINL) held Mini-Ratna status, and the Indian Iron and Steel Company (IISCO) was merged with SAIL, where it now works as SAIL's IISCO Steel Plant at Burnpur. So both 1 and 2 hold.

  • 1. RINL held Mini-Ratna status.
  • 2. IISCO was merged with SAIL.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: RINL held Mini-Ratna status.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: IISCO was merged with SAIL.

Only (c) is left. This one needs every statement.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Statement 2 is also correct.
  • (b) Statement 1 is also correct.
  • (c) Correct: both statements hold.
  • (d) Both statements hold, so this fails.

Worth knowing: RINL was later upgraded to Navratna (2010), so the Mini-Ratna label is dated.
