Question 59: History and Culture

The ruler of which one of the following States was removed from power by the British on the pretext of misgovernance?

aAwadh
bJhansi
cNagpur
dSatara

AnswerThe answer is (a).

The British annexed Awadh in 1856 under Dalhousie, on the pretext of misgovernment by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, and he was removed from power. Jhansi, Nagpur and Satara were annexed under the Doctrine of Lapse because the rulers died without natural heirs. So Awadh is the case of misgovernance.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: Awadh was annexed in 1856 for alleged misgovernance.
  • (b) Jhansi was annexed under the Doctrine of Lapse.
  • (c) Nagpur was annexed under the Doctrine of Lapse.
  • (d) Satara was annexed under the Doctrine of Lapse.
