Question 48: Polity and Governance

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.Jawaharlal Nehru was in his fourth term as the Prime Minister of India at the time of his death.
  2. 2.Jawaharlal Nehru represented Rae Bareilly constituency as a member of Parliament.
  3. 3.The first non-Congress Prime Minister of India assumed office in the year 1977.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a1 and 2 only
b3 only
c1 only
d1 and 3

AnswerThe answer is (d).

Nehru was Prime Minister at his death in May 1964, in his fourth term (after the interim period from 1947 and the 1952, 1957 and 1962 elections). So statement 1 is right. He represented Phulpur, not Rae Bareli, in Parliament. The first non-Congress Prime Minister, Morarji Desai, took office in 1977. So 1 and 3.

  • 1. He died in office in his fourth term.
  • 2. Nehru represented Phulpur, not Rae Bareli.
  • 3. Morarji Desai became Prime Minister in 1977.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: He died in office in his fourth term.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them leaves 3 out.

What you needed to know: Morarji Desai became Prime Minister in 1977.

Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 2.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Statement 2 is false; Nehru sat for Phulpur.
  • (b) Misses statement 1, which is also correct.
  • (c) Misses statement 3, which is also correct.
  • (d) Correct: statements 1 and 3 hold.
