Question 39: International Relations and Current Affairs
Who among the following bowlers have taken more than 500 wickets in Test cricket?
- 1.Wasim Akram
- 2.Richard Hadlee
- 3.Glenn McGrath
- 4.Courtney Walsh
Select the correct answer using the code given below:
AnswerThe answer is (b).
By 2006 Glenn McGrath had passed 500 Test wickets and Courtney Walsh had finished with 519, so items 3 and 4 qualify. Wasim Akram finished with 414 and Richard Hadlee with 431, short of 500. So the answer is 3 and 4 only.
- 1. Wasim Akram took 414 Test wickets.
- 2. Richard Hadlee took 431 Test wickets.
- 3. Glenn McGrath took more than 500 Test wickets.
- 4. Courtney Walsh took 519 Test wickets.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: Wasim Akram took 414 Test wickets.
Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 2, 3 or 4.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Wasim Akram and Hadlee both fall short of 500 wickets.
- (b) Correct: McGrath and Walsh crossed 500.
- (c) Akram and Hadlee do not qualify.
- (d) Akram and Hadlee do not qualify, so not all four.
