Question 27: International Relations and Current Affairs

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.North Atlantic Co-operation Council (NACC) is the name of the new organization which has replaced the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
  2. 2.The United States of America and the United Kingdom became members of NATO when it was formed in 1949.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a1 only
b2 only
cBoth 1 and 2
dNeither 1 nor 2

AnswerThe answer is (b).

NATO was set up by the Washington Treaty of April 1949, and the USA and the UK were among its twelve founding members. NATO has not been replaced. The North Atlantic Co-operation Council (NACC), created in 1991 as a forum for dialogue with former Warsaw Pact states, was itself replaced in 1997 by the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council. So only statement 2 holds.

  • 1. NACC never replaced NATO; it was a dialogue forum later replaced by the EAPC.
  • 2. The USA and the UK were founding members in 1949.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: NACC never replaced NATO; it was a dialogue forum later replaced by the EAPC.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (d) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: The USA and the UK were founding members in 1949.

Only (b) is left. This one needs every statement.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Statement 1 is false; NATO still exists.
  • (b) Correct: only statement 2 holds.
  • (c) Statement 1 is false, so both cannot hold.
  • (d) Statement 2 is true, so this is wrong.
