Question 25: International Relations and Current Affairs
With reference to the international meetings held in the year 2006, which of the following pairs is/are correctly matched?
- 1.NAM Summit : Havana
- 2.APEC Meeting : Bangkok
- 3.EU–India Summit : Helsinki
- 4.UN Climate Change Conference : Geneva
Select the correct answer using the codes given below:
AnswerThe answer is (b).
The 2006 meetings: the 14th NAM Summit was in Havana (September), and the EU-India Summit was in Helsinki (October), since Finland held the EU presidency. APEC 2006 was in Hanoi, not Bangkok, and the UN Climate Change Conference of 2006 was in Nairobi, not Geneva. So only 1 and 3 are correctly matched.
- 1. The NAM Summit of 2006 was in Havana.
- 2. APEC 2006 was in Hanoi.
- 3. The EU-India Summit of 2006 was in Helsinki.
- 4. The 2006 UN climate conference was in Nairobi.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.
What you needed to know: APEC 2006 was in Hanoi.
- Then, if you were sure statement 3 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 3 out.
What you needed to know: The EU-India Summit of 2006 was in Helsinki.
Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 4.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Misses the Helsinki match, which is also correct.
- (b) Correct: Havana (NAM) and Helsinki (EU-India) are right.
- (c) APEC 2006 was in Hanoi, not Bangkok.
- (d) APEC was not in Bangkok, and the climate conference was not in Geneva.
